COFFIN STREET STUDENTS’ RESIDENCE

bowdoin college, brunswick, maine

As part of a campus plan to accommodate an increasing freshman population two new dormitories were built and the college’s six existing dormitories, “The Bricks”, were completely renewed, to provide a total of 403 beds. The two new buildings, the Coffin Street dormitories, define a new residential neighborhood at the southern edge of campus. They provide 80 beds each, and continue the social structure of the college’s existing six dormitories: two room doubles grouped around generous hallway common space in a walk up building. The simple massing is in keeping with the existing neo-Georgian residence halls on campus, while the articulation of the brick facades uses large windows and common stairs to create a contemporary expression.
