ACC HISTORICAL

GWANGJU, REPUBLIC OF KOREA

The Historic Buildings occupy the center of the Asia Culture Center. The buildings, formerly the headquarters of the Jeonam Provincial office, and Democracy Plaza and Fountain, were witnesses to the tragic uprisings of May 18, 1980 that led to Korean democracy. The project mandate was to provide a memorial to the tragic events of 5/18 and, in the spirit of regeneration, to house the Asian Democratic Civic Center, Event Hall, NGO Interchange Center, and administrative facilities for the ACC. The buildings contain 8,000SM of space and have been completely renewed, including the updating of all building finishes, systems, and envelope. The new glass-enclosed Visitor Service Center seamlessly connects to the existing historic buildings and is the visitor’s central orientation point for all aspects of the ACC.
